Description

The dhoti, also referred to as veshti, vetti, dhuti, mardani, chaadra, dhotar, jai-boh, and panchey, is a style of sarong that is tied to resemble "loose trousers" from the outside. It is a lower garment that is a component of the traditional attire worn by men in the Indian subcontinent. A rectangular piece of unstitched cloth, typically around 4.0 metres (13 feet) long, is used to make the dhoti. It is wrapped around the waist and the legs and tied, either in the front or the rear. The dhoti is promoted as the male equivalent of the sari, which women wear to ceremonials both religious and secular (functions). On auspicious occasions, a yellow silk dhoti called a pitambar is worn. Dhauti, which means "to wash" or "to purify" in Sanskrit, is where the name "dhoti" comes from. Simply said, it refers to the cleaned item of clothing that was worn as part of daily wear. As it is worn today as a formal dhoti, the dhoti originated from the old antriya, which was passed through the legs, tucked at the back and covered the legs loosely before flowing into long pleats at the front of the legs. While a casual and short dhoti tightly encircles both legs, this design pulls the rear side to the front and tucks it at the waist before tucking the two loose ends at the back, creating a firmly fitted trouser-like dhoti that encircles both legs.
